صَباحٌ عِندَ العَين

أَستَيقِظُ مُبَكِّرًا وَأَذهَبُ إلى العَين.

I wake up early and go to the spring.

العَينُ في وَسَطِ القَريَة، تَحتَ قَوسٍ مِنَ الحَجَر.

The spring is in the middle of the village, under an arch of stone.

الماءُ بارِدٌ جِدًّا في الصَّباح. هُناكَ كوبٌ مِنَ المَعدَنِ عَلى الحَجَر.

The water is very cold in the morning. There is a metal cup on the stone.

تَأتي امرَأَةٌ كَبيرَةٌ وَتَقول: «صَباحُ الخَير. مِن أَينَ أَنتَ؟»

An older woman comes and says: “Good morning. Where are you from?”

أَقول: «صَباحُ النّور. أَنا مِن هُنا، مِن عَينِ كارِم.»

I say: “Morning of light. I'm from here, from Ein Karem.”

تَضحَكُ وَتَقول: «إذَن اِشرَبْ مَرَّتَين!»

She laughs and says: “Then drink twice!”

أَشرَبُ وَأَجلِسُ قَليلًا. الماءُ يَتَكَلَّمُ، وَأَنا أَستَمِع.

I drink and sit for a little while. The water talks, and I listen.
